Over 30 Heritage Touring Cars from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s lined up on the grid for the revived Apex Steel Muscle Car Masters over the last weekend of August, set for three big days of racing alongside the combined might of Sydney’s tin top racing community.
For most of the weekend, the field was dominated by the three Group A Ford Sierra RS500s of Jonathan Webb (Colin Bond Caltex), Terry Lawlor (Dick Johnson Shell) and Andrew Miedecke in a rebuilt example of the Kenwood car that he ran back in the day.

Group C honours were shared by Glen Gerstel in a VH Commodore, Anthony Tenkate in another VH, Dean Howe in the stunning JPS BMW 635 CSi and Tony Sawford in the ex-Allan Grice Torana A9X Craven Mild Torana A9X.
In race one, we were happy to see newcomer Glen Ormerod off to a great start in the ex-Bo Seton Mk. 1 Capri. He shaved a whisker off Carl Muller’s long standing Group C under 3.0-litre lap record, which was also set in an ex-Bo Seton Capri.
The highlight of the weekend was the Saturday night race, which saw us run under the lights of Sydney Motorsport Park in the cool, slightly misty evening air. Webb had no issue adapting to the conditions, and went on to win the race and break the long-standing Group A lap record along the way.
Sunday morning saw the running of the special Racing for Jason event, remembering Kiwi champion Jason Richards. Webb maintained his strong form from the evening race, winning the Jason Richards Trophy in Group A with Anthony Tenkate claiming the Group C prize in the ex-Cullen VH.

Amongst many special cars, we were pleased to be joined by Duncan MacKellar once again, this time behind the wheel of the 1971 European Group 2 BMW Batmobile, which was a popular inclusion in the event.

- Group A over 3,000 cc – Terry Lawlor
- Group A 2,001 to 3,000 cc – David Towe
- Group C over 3,000 cc – Anthony Tenkate and Dean How in a dead heat
- Group C 2,001 to 3,000 cc – Lloyd Williams
- Group C 1,601 to 2,000 cc – Scott Fleming
- Group C 1,301 to 1,600 cc – Vern Young
Joining the Group C & A cars were 16 5-Litre V8 Supercars, which contested a series of super sprint events over the weekend. Ray Hislop in the Nulon Ford Falcon FG put in an impressive performance as the fastest across the weekend. He was closely followed by Hugh Zochling, Marty Miller and Peter Xiberras all in Commodores. Xiberras’ car was the 2014 Red Bull Championship winner, which was great to see on the track again.
With Muscle Car Masters in the books, the Heritage Touring Cars points series comes to an end once more. However we’re not hanging up the keys just yet – far from it. A tremendous grid is set to load up aboard the Spirit of Tasmania to head to the Baskerville Historics over October 16 – 18.
