Wintery Weekends and Great Racing Continue at the 2025 HSRCA Spring Festival

The start of Sunday morning’s race three

Heritage Touring Cars went to One Raceway over the last weekend in August, to take part in the first outing of Class Wars for under three-litre Group C & A cars at the 2025 HSRCA Spring Festival.

We were thrilled to see an enthusiastic response to the initiative, sixteen drivers making the road trip to Goulburn including five from Victoria and three from Queensland. In what is potentially a first since the period, seven Group C Escorts competed together on track, with Lloyd Williams making his debut in the series pedalling a Mazda RX-3 that similarly enjoyed its first run since period.

Warm and friendly atmosphere in the pits and paddock

The pits and paddock had a warm, friendly family atmosphere, with lots of interesting cars to discover and good conversations to be had

While the welcome and atmosphere in the pits and paddock was warm and friendly, the weather was most certainly not. Friday was rainy, windy and freezing, with Saturday improving to just be the latter two before the sun finally came out on Sunday to get some warmth into the circuit, tyres and drivers.

Comparing the lap times between qualifying and race one, you can clearly see the effect the conditions had on performance. Cody Brewczynski secured the first spot on the grid with a 1:15.32 in Carey McMahon’s Yellow Pages RX-7, Gregory Keam a little under a second behind and followed by dad Russell Keam shortly thereafter in a pair of Escorts. Scott Robinson would go fourth overall and fastest in Group A, David Towe the only other Group A driver grappling with some gremlins as he got the weekend under way.

In race one Brewczynski would drop more than ten seconds off his qualifying pace and run away to a comfortable win, Robinson finding his pace in the 325i and moving into second. The Keams followed in third and fourth, David Holland and Tony Alford having a great Torana VS Escort battle for seventh. Steve Axisa, Nathan Gordon, Derek Wicket and David Towe orchestrated a magic scrap for the remaining top ten placings, Cole Spender and Gavin Adamson finishing just a few tenths apart as well.

By race two on Saturday afternoon everyone was as warmed up as they were going to get that day, and times kept dropping. Brewczynski again led comfortably, Robinson only just managing to hold off a charging Towe in third.

Lloyd Williams chased by Adil Jemali through turn two

A four-way Escort battle followed the lead cars, Jason Delaney getting by Greg Keam for fourth and Tony Alford separating the father and son duo, Axisa chasing in the Torana. This put Holland in range of Wickett, who managed to get by and just hold off the New South Welshman. It was great to see Lloyd Williams start to find his feet in his first outing in the series, enjoying a closely matched dice with Adil Jemali who was enjoying his second.

By the time we headed out for the 12-lapper mid-morning on Sunday, it was already warmer than the previous day had managed. While he continued to get faster, running his fastest lap of the weekend, Brewczynski enjoyed much less breathing room at the close of the race compared to Saturday’s efforts, Robinson right on his tail in second. Justin Nilsson claimed his first podium of the weekend with a great run in the Nissan EXA Turbo.

Meanwhile, Tony Alford was able to get by Jason Delaney, who faced a strong challenge from Steve Axisa, who in turn had outrun Russell Keam. Derek Wickett now had his sights on the Alfa of Nathan Gordon, the pair separated by just a few tenths and surely accumulating some fun stories to swap during the convoy home. Adil Jemali had a great run, improving two positions and just putting the nose of his Escort just barely ahead of Gavin Adamson’s PF60 by the end of the race.

Cody Brewczynski

The final race of the weekend saw us finish with an almost full field, Cody Brewczynski completing a clean sweep of the meeting in a standout performance. Justin Nilsson was able to climb one more step of the podium to finish his weekend in second, hassling Brewczynski to the finish as well. Scott Robinson capped off an extremely consistent weekend in third.

This was another ten lap race, but the long weekend of racing had done little to wear the drivers out. Nathan Gordon managed to hold out Derek Wickett, Russell Keam also in the thick of it with the three drivers separated by just two tenths at the line. Cole Spender and Lloyd Williams enjoyed a similarly entertaining dice for an exciting finish to the weekend.

Our thanks to the HSRCA for hosting a friendly and smoothly run Spring Festival with some great long races, and to the organisers of Class Wars for an excellent initiative. We’re pleased to say that the event will return in 2026, but for now we’re looking forward the full field being back together at The Bend Classic, which will be held at The Bend Motorsport Park October 24 – 26. Stay tuned for more from the Legends of Bathurst.
