Nissan Motorsport Celebrated on Shannons Legends of Motorsport

Fred Gibson, Jim Richards and Mark Skaife reunite for next episode of new 7mate series …

SHANNONS Legends of Motorsport continues on 7mate this weekend with a special focus on the achievements and efforts of the works Nissan Motorsport squad in Australian touring car racing.

Nissan’s touring car program in Australia began in 1981 with turbocharged Bluebird Group C race cars and culminated in the awesome Group A GT-R ‘Godzilla’ in 1992.

Nissan claimed victory at Bathurst in 1991 and 1992 as well as three consecutive Australian Touring Car Championships in 1990, 1991 and 1992 and three Bathurst 1000 pole positions.

Team boss Fred Gibson and former Nissan factory drivers Jim Richards and Mark Skaife join Neil Crompton and the Shannons Legends of Motorsport team to take a ride back down memory lane via the vast archive vision of Seven Sport.

There’s a range of old archive vision not seen since it first aired as well as plenty of familiar Nissan gems – including the 1984 Bathurst pole position lap of George Fury.

In fact, the very #15 Bluebird Turbo he used to set the pole position lap will form part of the set backdrop, having recently been restored and returned to service.

The program will celebrate all of the Nissan race cars of the 1980s and 1990s – Bluebird, Skyline DR30, Skyline HR-31 (GTS-R) and GT-R, as well as the Gazelle, EXA Turbo and the odd other gem.

Mark Oastler takes an up-close look at Jim Richards’ 1990 ATCC-winning Skyline GTS-R, while Aaron Noonan returns too with some more golden vision from the vault, much of it unseen in many years and unearthed from deep in the Seven Sport library.

There’s plenty of familiar old vision as well as some rare gems so tune in for the series that celebrates Aussie motorsport’s golden era this Saturday, August 16 on 7mate.

The fourth episode in a 12-part series celebrating Australian motorsport was filmed in front of a live audience at Shannons Auction centre in Melbourne.
